We created a hair and makeup look for a recent editorial shoot for Alison Moore of Hobbits Vintage Creations. It was inspired by Mexican artist Frieda Khalo. Our look channelled this icon with a smattering of Jane Russell thrown in for good measure, courtesy of our model, Saffron.
We spent a sunny afternoon in Bishop’s Castle (or thereabouts!) with Alison and her son, fashion photographer, Reuben Moore who has worked for Vogue Japan, Vogue Thailand, Glamour Russia, Tatler Russia, FashionToMax, Harvey Nichols to name but a few. The images featured here were actually shot by my partner in crime, Charlotte, who has a real eye for photography.
Alison creates stunning headpieces, veils, corsages, bags, hat and more from vintage fabrics and the shoot was intended to bring the colour and vibrancy of Frieda and her work to illustrate the different styles Alison’s work encompasses. We think it did her justice.
I’ve been very busy with The Blusherettes lately, my vintage hair and makeup business which has been going from strength to strength since launching last year. My fellow Blusherette, Charlotte and I really wanted to showcase our signature style so we organised a 1960s-inspired shoot with some local suppliers and above are the results.
We wanted to capture the timeless romance and classical style of this iconic era, obviuosly this is helped by the hair and makeup but it’s the little details that we wanted to bring to it to show brides out there that you can be a modern girl and love vintage – it’s not fusty and dusty, it’s bright, chic and will never date!
We chose a dress that was reminiscent of something that would’ve been worn by the likes of Racquel Welch. Our model’s tiara also channels the period beautifully, and in the ‘after the wedding’ shots, she’s wearing items made from beautiful vintage fabrics that have been designed using 1950s and 60s style items as a template.
Of course the incidentals, like the beautiful bouquet in bright orange blooms, the gorgeous cake in fresh mint and white, and the quirky yet classic hand-stamped cultery also added to the vibe. Finally the invitations carry a retro colour palette that we felt helped create the right vibe for this fantastic era.
I hope you like it!
